Which setting would allow for the most action adventure in your narrative? Write 150 words on your choice of setting and why Explain how it will allow for the following: Provide possible danger Hidden secrets Opportunities for being lost/escape Vast natural terrain (unpredictable) Escapist for the audience (exotic/un-real?) Contribute to the idea of spectacle (wow factor) Consider:Ext: The possibility of conflict between the hero and villain
What is Narrative? THE NARRATIVE OF A PROGRAMME IS NOT JUST ITS STORYLINE. IT IS ALSO HOW THE STORY IS ORGANISED. What is a closed narrative? What is an open narrative? Which type of narrative do action adventure have?
Action adventure narrative is often linear – This is commonly the three act structure The situation is usually based around a problem, the complication of this problem and its resolution – What problems can arise in action adventure? How are they resolved? Watch the clip to help you
Action Adventure – label either Action sequences (1) Adventure narrative (2) Protagonist defeats antagonist A loveable animal/sidekick Series of spectacular crashes Exotic locations Spectacular special effects Extended chases (car, horse etc) Protagonist = good Fist or sword fights Protagonist falls in love High energy stunts Protagonist overcomes impossible odds Protagonist on a quest (mission) Dramatic discoveries of treasure Daring rescues in a race against time Gun battles/explosives

CODES in Action Adventure Visual – A clue e.g. a map = quest Verbal – A piece of dialogue that gives a clue about the character/narrative Action – an action which drives the narrative forwarde.g. antagonist picks up a gun Enigma – an unanswered question e.g. a symbol is found These are all signs that help the audience understand the narrative – denotation and connotation
What codes are present in this poster? Textually analyse this poster? What do you denote? What does it connote? Write at least 3 responses
Linear Narrative StructureRussian theorist, TzvetanTodorov, suggests that all narratives follow a four part structure. Disruption/ Disequilibrium Attempted repair
Watch the followingWhich scenes apply to which areas of Todorov’s structure?
Equilibrium Todorov’s Narrative structure Working title: New equilibrium Disequilibrium Attempted repair Plan out your narrative for your action adventure film Remember: FAMILY AUDIENCE
Film Synopsis Often found on a DVD cover – summarises the film and sells the film to the audience (use your Todorov plan to help you) E.g.Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth, and demise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) he’s not sure if it’s love – or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past. What can you tell from this synopsis? Protagonist Antagonist Quest Princess (love interest) Themes Narrative
